Customer Review: Potato Ricer for Fresh Baby Food

I use the Progressive International Potato Ricer, together with a Smoothee maker and a bag feeder, to let my five-month-old eat fresh fruits and vegetables. It serves this purpose well except that the piston fits loosely and has no rings; using small quantities, the amount that passes around the piston is annoying. Other improvements would be to make the spare screen compartment water-tight and to eliminate the narrow voids on the undersides of the handles which are hard to clean.
After peeling and coring the uncooked fruit, I add it with a Vitamin C tablet in about 1/5 volume of water to the Smoothee makerBack to Basics SE2000B Smoothie Elite Smoothie Maker, Brushed Chrome to keep the purée from oxidizing. Pouring it onto the fine screen of the ricer, I squeeze it into a bowl and then fill baby food containers. They keep better in the refrigerator if they are full; I discard any discolored layer that forms on top. Lightly cooked vegetables, e.g. peas and sweet potatoes, do not need the Vitamin C.

I invert the nipple and cut an X on the inner side of the pore using a sharp razor blade, cutting only deeply enough to show a 1/8 inch opening. In its normal conformation, the nipple still seals until it is squeezed. An object that fits closely inside the nipple (I use an ice cream scoop handle) helps the baby get the last bit from the bag.
