Quite frankly, I didn't expect this unit to be as high in quality as it is. It is very nicely designed, not ostentatious, just contemporary nice. The plastic the unit is made of is thick and feels substantial. On the underside, there are two grooves which will hold the unit securely over almost any bowl.
There's a switch on the side to select between slicing and julienne. The mechanism feels durable and like it will last for several years. In Julienne position, a separate set of blades brought up from the bottom and makes cutting the strips quick work. In the slice position, the Julienne blades are retracted. A four position switch is embedded in the handle that permits adjusting the slicing table for three thickness: paper thin, medium and thick. Thick seems like it is about 3/16ths of an inch.
The fourth position on the switch in the handle is a safety lock. Its use is highly recommended because the blades are very sharp. Even with switch in the locked position, you do not want to handle this unit carelessly.
Operation is smooth as silk. I'm a coward, so I will always be inclined to use the included finger guard most of the time. The table is wider than I've seen on other slicers, which is nice. The surfaces are smooth and the cutting action is very nice. The finger guard is unusually well designed, in my opinion, and provides a more than adequate grip.
All in all, this is a durable and well designed kitchen accessory. My only complaint is a very small one: I wish that the finger guard and unit could be clipped together for storage. Overall, this unit is of higher quality than many other slicing devices and should last for a long time. A very nice unit.
